I knew if I didn't leave, I would die. Whether by his hand or by mine. The empty northbound boxcar was my magic carpet, my chance to leave and never look back. I needed to find one person—one person I could love and trust. One person who could love me back. Just one person. Instead . . . I found two.
A sinfully sexy standalone romance from New York Times & USA Today bestselling author Tess Oliver.

Stand aloneNo cliffhanger-(ending sets up a thread of interest for the next book as well)
I read the synopsis/ free sample and was highly intrigued. Premise was good but fell short very far an quickly. Plot holes and inconsistencies in characters, contradicting each other or simply not making sense at all. Insta-love thats so true an deep and then nah I didnt really mean it. Very little to endear us to the characters and thats overshadowed by poor plot, and even less action. Whole story is really like one scene of a movie that was too short and got stretched out both ways to fill space. It was very hard to finish I stopped reading a gazillion times yet my ocd wouldnt let me leave it. I definitely wouldnt pay for another title by this author and I'd be reluctant on a freebie. I have read worse, the editing was pretty good, and it takes heart to put your work out there to be judged (plus the hot cover didnt hurt) so I gave it 3 stars.

This is the first book I have read from this writer and it was awesome! Just when I thought I had it figured out, nope I did not.. It was a great story of love, loss, New beginnings.
The writing is okay, and you feel for the characters. But the ending is just slapped together. It isn't the happily ever after that the book description or rest of the story promises.
Sexy hard edged brothers with an unbreakable bond meet their match. What a beautiful story of how hardships can forge a bond most only dream about. Fate... Fate is a definite. Love... Love is family. You get it in this story. It grabs your heart strings And well worth it.
This book blew me away, to think you can find nice guys to take you into their home and not have a problem think again, but Tess you nailed this and I couldn't read fast enough to see if anyone would get the HEA.I will be reading more of your books.Pick up the book people you can't go wrong.Happy Reading.
Another great book. I'm never disappointed by this author. Her characters are well thought out complex people that make a story compelling.
It's been a long time since I had time for a pleasure read. With my work, I usually end up going into editor mode, get frustrated and stop reading. But this didn't happen with Brothers. Because it's usually my kryptonite with books, I'll just say, Brothers was very well written and edited. The author voice was distinct and easy to read, and the passive writing was practically non-existent. Then enabled me to get into the heart of the story itself.
Each chapter is told from one of the three protagonist's POVs. This was a great vehicle for me to get to know each character. While the title suggests a story about two brothers, it's also about the woman who comes into their lives. Romance tends to be told from the female POV, and as the story starts off in Joelle's POV and I got to know her, Jesse and Zach also make a grand entrance...though their stories take a little longer to develop.
This story could quickly rush down Assumption Street and meet Erotica Lane. But that's not what this story is about. Sure, there's some flirting, kissing, and red hot sex, but the story's focus is about these three people and how each find happiness...as is the plot of any good romance. The protags must find their HEA or HFN by the end. And because at the heart of it this is a contemporary romance, we can automatically assume they'll all find that. But it's the telling of the story that's the most important here. I felt Ms Oliver did an exceptional job of it.
For me, I would have liked a bit more plot to the story. Something...more eminent...to keep me guessing. I admit, I found the plot somewhat predictable, but I still enjoyed the story because I liked the characters, and because the author's voice resonated well with my reading tastes. But at the heart of this, the story is character-driven more than plot-driven, and I'm OK with that.
I must admit that I bounced back and forth between Jesse and Zach, which I liked the most. They were both very unique characters, but also had a wonderful relationship as brothers. Yes, there was a lot of competition between them, but it never got so angry or jealous of the other that I felt the author was going to do something crazy.
Honestly, I thought this story was going to be all happy-happy joy-joy, a story where nothing bad happens, and we just follow the characters around their small town and everyone is happy and loves each other, because this does have an element of an uplifting tale. But that wasn't it at all. Again, while the story did have some flaws (light plot), I really enjoyed getting to know the characters and appreciated how unique each of their stories were, and at the time, all moving the whole story forward. Ms Oliver made me care about Joelle and the brothers, and about their tightly-knit community. Well done.
